Good post, though I remember in the mid-80's (as a low-level Intel employee) that there was a lot of dissatisfaction with what design(s) AMD was offering in exchange for Intel design(s). I guess as the value of the respective products got too out of balance, AMD just didn't have anything with which to catch up.
