Slacker711,

Pres. Envoy to Visit China for CDMA Market

2000 03/08 16:52

Former information-communication minister Namgoong Suek will visit China as a presidential envoy from March 16 through 18.

The visit is a follow-up to an agreement on cooperation between the two countries on information and communications, and in particular code division multiple access (CDMA), made during President Kim Dae- jung's visit to China in 1998.

Special envoy Namgoong will hand over a letter from President Kim to Chinese government officials, containing appreciation of Korean mobile phone carriers' being permitted to participate in the first round of bidding for a CDMA project carried by China Unicom, a Chinese mobile phone carrier, officials said yesterday.

He will also hold talks with government officials and businessmen including Wu Ji Chuan, minister of information and industry, about further cooperation and a tie-up of the two nations' mobile phone operators.

Samsung Electronics and LG Information and Communication are participating in the terminal sector of China's CDMA market.

The telecom industry expects Namgoong's visit will help Korean companies make inroads into China's CDMA market.

Best,

Brian H.
