PCS To Be Upgraded Via EVRC

2000 03/10 17:21

Amid controversy over SK Telecom's (SKT) takeover of Shinsegi Telecom, which gave SKT a majority market share in the mobile phone industry, three personal communication service providers companies plan to upgrade services to their subscribers.

Korea Telecom Freetel, Hansol M.com and LG Telecom yesterday announced their plans to introduce Enhanced Variable Rate codec, or EVRC service, and mobile station modem, or MSM 3000 embodied terminals, or their handsets.

By doing this, the cost for the construction of base stations across the nation can decrease by as much as 80 billion won per year, with the savings used to improve services, according to industry sources.

Scheduled to hit the market beginning March 15, cell phones installed with EVRC and MSM 3000 technologies should improve high speed mobile data service with a transmission rate of 64Kbps (Kilo bit per second).

Furthermore, PCS subscribers can get high-speed mobile data services from mobile service providers at a lower cost than before.

SK Telecom began supplying the EVRC services in Feb 1998 and as of end-1999, 86 percent of its subscribers are using the EVRC service.
