Eric L: Since you are savvy in the area of standards (my sympathy for those long meetings and "conferences") as well as smart cards, would you explain the interrelationship in a specific case.

For example, if China Unicom requires SIM capability in phones supplied, do the appropriate standards bodies have to approve the SIM specifications prior to the shipment of the phones themselves, or before the shipment of the SIM's. Guess what I am asking, would SIM "ready" phones (similar to the old "cable ready" TVs be practical?

Or is there another hurdle to China Unicom's CDMA roll out (CDMA phones with SIM's supplied) which is real but not understood in terms of timing of CDMA in China?

Curious as always.
