Glenn - just this past month, Softagon Corporation (my company) filed for the following patents:

1. Two-click ordering
2. Three-click ordering
3. Four-click ordering
4. Five-click ordering
5. Six-click ordering
6. Seven-click ordering
7. Eight-click ordering
8. Nine-click ordering

Once I get all these patents, my goal is to sell them to Amazon - then Amazon can sue every e-commerce site that allows a customer to buy something on the web in less than ten mouse clicks - and in doing so, Amazon will drive all other e-commerce sites out of business (consumers will view the necessity of clicking the mouse ten times on other sites as a hassle and will be driven to Amazon for the simplicity of ordering).

You have to wonder if Bezos knew the Gleick article was going to be published in today's NYT - Bezos posting of his "Open Letter regarding Patents" on Amazon's web site this week is, perhaps, too much of a coincidence.
