Tom,

I had to chuckle at Maryland's players saying over the past few weeks that they are the best team in the ACC.

Maryland had a streak this year where they were playing great but they seem to have cooled off as evidenced by the last regular season game against Virginia. They didn't look all that good against NC State even though they won.

That said, I think Maryland will do better in the tourney than they have in recent years. This is a well-balanced and athletic team.

This is a very young MD team that lost four starters from last year, three are on NBA rosters. They start 1 frosh, 3 sophs and a jr. The first three reserves into the game are two freshman and a jr. It's not a super athletic team but they are balanced and play well together. Until this weekend they were an excellent passing team with good defense. This should be a better team next year but it's all relative, Duke is even younger than Maryland, starting two freshmen.

There is a strong track record of college teams doing well immediately after the departure of a superstar, in this case Steve Francis. Players won't be sitting around watching him.

Ekezie, Proffit and Stokes are gone as well. Baxter played a lot when Ekezie went down but Morris is the only returning starter.

I sure hope Carolina doesn't go to the Big Dance. They certainly haven't earned it.

The ACC other than Duke and Maryland is down this year. If a third team gets in I'd pick Virginia but they needed a win this weekend.

Maryland had a great year so far considering that they were picked to finish 6th (by some) in the ACC. Anything they do in the tournament is gravy..
