Samsung Will Be Top in Production of DRDRAM in 2000: Nikkei Survey March 10, 2000 (TOKYO) -- Korea's Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. will be the undisputed leader in Direct Rambus DRAM (DRDRAM) production in 2000, a Nikkei Market Access analyst said.
Tamao Kikuchi forecast Samsung to be ranked first, producing approximately 82 million units of 144Mb and 288Mb DRDRAMs combined. This is more than twice the approximately 40 million DRDRAMs to be produced by second-ranked Toshiba Corp.
The third place will go to Japan's NEC Corp., with production of about half of Toshiba's, or less than 20 million DRDRAMs. Followed by the three companies are Germany's Infineon Technologies AG, Korea's Hyundai Electronics Industries Co., Ltd. and Micron Technology Inc. of the United States.
By capacity, or production volume combined by each surveyed manufacturer, production of 144Mb DRDRAMs will be approximately nine million units per month in the second quarter of this year and increase significantly to reach 14 million in the following quarter.
The forecast says that 144Mb DRDRAM production will peak in the second quarter of 2001, or about 19 million per month, and then fall. The production of 288Mb DRDRAMs will start in the second quarter, and it will be equal to DRDRAMs in terms of quantity around the second quarter of 2001.
However, the ratio of DRDRAMs to DRAMs is still small. It is expected to be about 10 percent in 2000. |
