Re: it is truly incredible the way these people think...

Elmer, do you really think Intel would be anything more than a second tier calculator chip and RAM manufacturer if IBM had selected the 68000 for the IBM PC instead of the 8088?

Intel (and Microsoft) are creations of the Justice Department's hammering of IBM. Justice effectively split one monopoly off into three - allowing at least a breath of free enterprise into these markets.

Intel and Microsoft were both chosen because they were considered by IBM to be unlikely to ever become significant competitors. Microsoft was run by a spoiled-rich-kid college-drop-out, Intel had a blatantly non-competitive chip compared to Motorola's 68000, and Intel's CPU group had just finished getting its clock cleaned by Zilog - a division of Standard Oil of New Jersey that made typewriters!

No wonder why IBM figured they were less likely to wind up with any real competition from Intel than any other possible chip supplier.

When the 286 came out, the IBM guys congratulated themselves on having made a brilliant selection. Ultimately, of course, a natural monopoly is a natural monopoly, and with (effectively)infinite resources available, Intel managed to produce some competitive chips. Same thing happened with Microsoft - the difference being that "the rich-kid dropout" turned out to be an almost psychotically fanatical competitor - but that's history we all know!
