(3/10/2000) The output and sales of Konka cellular phones will reach one million this year, according to Chen Weirong, the president of Konka Group, the March 7 Zhongguo Dianzi Bao (China Electronics News) reported. Speaking in Beijing on March 2nd at the Cellular Phone Promotion and Presentation, Chen reported that the company will realize the independent development of Konka cellular phones from software to chips in two years. Its total investment in the cellular phone project will be no less than RMB 500 million (US$60.5 million). By 2003, Konka cellular phones will account for 10% of the Chinese cellular phone market, and by 2005 its market share would grow to 20%. In the past two years, Konka Group has worked in partnership with Lucent Technologies, jointly tackling the key technological difficulties in developing cellular phones. In October 1999, the first-generation cellular phone developed by Konka, K3118 Qing Yi Tong, passed the authentication of FTA, an international authoritative institution for GSM networks. In November 1999, Konka Group put China's first proprietary mobile telephone production line into operation. Konka's second cellular phone production line will go into operation in May of this year. Starting in May, Konka will introduce a new model of cellular phones every two months. By June, Konka will have 45 cellular phone sales branches in the whole country. -- |
