DVD is starting to hit "smaller-town" America. This is excerpted from today's Akron Beacon Journal:

A NEW SPIN ON VIEWING VIDEOS

DVD's surpass quality of VHS tapes and satellite broadcasts...
By Andy Pargh

After more than a year of hype and delays, DVD's are finally here.

After testing preliminary units I have to admit that the video quality exceeds that of VHS tape, laser discs and satellite broadcasts. It allows for previously unheard of functions such as parental controls, multiple viewing options and multiple language preferences. Some will even accomodate movies shot with multiple camera angles for certain scenes and multiple endings so that, depending on how the software is encoded, you may be able to change the plot development of a movie according to your taste.

Just about every movie provider will eventually release titles on DVD, but Columbia TriStar Home Video, Warner Home Video, and Polygram have already committed to this format.

Besides superior video image, DVD's will be compatible with the new Dolby Digital (formerly known as AC-3) audio format....when connected to a Dolby Digital audio/video receiver and speakers, a DVD player will be able to create the truest theater-at-home experience to date.

Because just about every electronics manufacturer is getting into the act, there is a better-than-average chance that this new format will catch on.

The article then goes on to talk about products from Pioneer, RCA, Toshiba, and Sony. It mentions "A separate processor chip drives a feature called Smooth Scan that allows viewers to seamlessly view movies or music videos at high speed, in slow motion or frame-by-frame.

The article continues by discussing a high-end product from Faroudja and states "Other DVD's expected in the coming weeks and months include units from Denon, Samsung, Sanyo, Sherwood, Philips/Magnavox and Yamaha."

The article ends with "Stay tuned. I'll be bringing you hands-on DVD reviews in the coming months."

ATTENTION SHORTS: DVD is coming and it will be big.

ATTENTION MUTUAL FUND ANALYSTS: Here's an opportunity to make a name for yourself. I'm "showing you the money!"
