BALTIMORE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 6, 2000--Mitsubishi Electronics America's Electronic Device Group today announced a 2.5 gigabit per second (Gbps) optical transmitter and receiver integrated modules for high-speed fiberoptic data and telecommunications applications. The transmitter and receiver integrated modules comply with several International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) standards and is ideal for Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) STM-16 / SONET OC-48 applications that are 15- to 60-km distances, such as within metropolitan area networks and transport networks. The transmitter and receiver integrated modules also comply with a multi-source agreement between Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, Alcatel Optronics, Ericsson Components AB, Lucent Technologies, and Sumitomo Electric Lightwave Corporation.
The transmitter, MF-2500STA, reduces both power consumption and module size because it contains an uncooled distributed feedback laser diode (DFB-LD). The receiver, MF-2500SRA or MF-2500SRB, reduces module size because it contains an embedded phase-locked-loop (PLL) circuit. In addition, the MF-2500SRB receiver contains an embedded avalanche photo diode (APD) and a DC-to-DC converter. The MF-2500SRA receiver complies with ITU S-16.1 and SONET IR-1 standards. The MF-2500SRB receiver complies with ITU L-16.1, L-16.2, and V-16.2 standards as well as SONET LR-1 and LR-2 standards. Future plans are to design 2.5-Gbps transmitter and receiver modules for 120-km and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) applications.
Under the terms of the multi-source agreement, Mitsubishi Electric, Alcatel, Ericsson, Lucent, and Sumitomo have initiated a series of economical, high-performance 2.5-Gbps uncooled laser transmitter and receiver modules that will continue with future product offerings. Modules from each company must conform to requirements specified in the agreement, including package dimensions and pin functionality, as well as meeting or exceeding specified optical and electrical characteristics. Although the companies involved in the agreement work closely to implement best-in-class transmitter features, each company independently designs, develops, markets, and distributes its own products.
"By offering 2.5-Gbps transmitter and receiver integrated modules that meet the requirements of the multi-source agreement, Mitsubishi is helping to provide designers with a reliable supply of standardized, low-cost, high-performance transmitters," said Jim Locke, senior marketing manager for optoelectronic products at Mitsubishi Electronics America. "This agreement means significant time and cost savings to system developers, who previously had to support multiple transmitter configurations in order to benefit from multiple sources."
