TeraBeam is PTMP The reason the signal is encrypted is that the laser is swept throughout an arc and every receiver receives every downstream in its sector. Encryption is used to ensure that customer A doesn't see what's being sent to customer B, etc. We should get more details at the formal unveiling tomorrow. TB appears to be a genuine breakthrough. What remains to be seen is how well it works under actual field conditions and what sort of rollout can be expected. My personal belief is that the last mile is such a huge opportunity that there is ample room for many different solutions which will serve different market segments. From the customer's standpoint the key variables are bitrate, reliability, deployment times, and price points. The actual delivery technology is largely irrelevant.
