Les,

I do not quite understand your point about manufacturing. However, I think that the main point of difference between our positions is that you are trying to measure productivity gains at the individual employee level whereas I am trying to measure it at the corporate level (including possible reduction in the number of employees).

Let's consider the consumer domain for a second. I recently bought a car from a Web site, the whole process took me about 2 hours. My previous experience shows that it would have taken me days of negotiations with the salesman to get the same car from a brick and mortar store for the same price. From my perspective, the internet increased my productivity. From the car saleman's perspective, (s)he is out of a job. From the overall economy's perspective, I think that productivity has increased, as an unnecessary middle layer has been removed. Just as DELL did for computer buying.
