Alcatel and CopperCom to Enable Voice Over DSL Services

Alcatel to Partner with CopperCom for Voice over DSL

RALEIGH, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 13, 2000--Alcatel (NYSE: ALA - news) and CopperCom announced the combination of Alcatel's industry leading DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) platform and CopperCom's pioneering VoDSL (Voice over DSL) solution to create compelling new business and residential service offerings. The two companies announced today that they have entered into an OEM agreement. Alcatel will resell CopperCom's entire voice over DSL product line as well as begin co-marketing and co-development activities to further enhance the product offerings of both companies. Supporting integrated multi-line voice and data applications, VoDSL offers service providers exciting new incremental revenue
opportunities.

``Our customers have been demanding CopperCom's carrier-class VoDSL solution', said Hal Thorne, Group Vice President of Access Systems for Alcatel in the US. ``CopperCom's VoDSL architecture meets the needs of the market, and is a valuable addition to our product portfolio. We are excited about working with CopperCom as Alcatel's VoDSL partner of choice to deliver a solid solution to the rapidly maturing market.'

``We're very pleased to be selected as Alcatel's partner,' said Cynthia Ringo, President and CEO of CopperCom. ``Alcatel's worldwide industry presence and industry leading DSL technology combined with CopperCom's innovative VoDSL products will benefit the market and contribute to the mutual growth of our customer bases.'

With nearly one and one half million lines shipped to service providers in North America, the Alcatel 1000 ATM Subscriber Access Multiplexer (ASAM) is the clear market leader in DSL and the platform of choice for incumbent local exchange carriers (ILECs) and competitive local exchange carriers (CLECs) deploying DSL. With the addition of CopperCom's VoDSL solution, Alcatel now delivers an expanded portfolio of service offerings including integrated multi-line voice and high-speed data services as well as a variety of other symmetric and asymmetric DSL solutions -- all over a single telephone access line.

DSL technology allows service providers to provide Internet access over standard telephone lines at speeds of up to 8 Mbps, nearly 200 times faster than today's traditional dial-up modems. DSL service is always on, eliminating the need for Internet dial-up and annoying busy signals. With ADSL, subscribers can simultaneously make telephone calls or send faxes while accessing the Internet at very high speed. While traditional ADSL supports just one telephone number on a given access line, Voice over DSL technology allows service providers to offer multiple telephone lines over a single subscriber access line.

``Our relationships with DSL service providers have given us a solid understanding of their requirements for a VoDSL solution', said Kevin Sheehan, Vice President of Marketing at Alcatel. ``Together with CopperCom we are able meet those requirements and deliver the solutions our customers are demanding.'

CopperComplete DSL

CopperComplete DSL enables delivery of multiple voice lines and high-speed data over a single copper pair in the local loop. The CopperComplete DSL architecture consists of two products, the CopperCom MXR for the customer premises, and the CopperCom Gateway, a device which sits between the DSLAM (Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer) and a Class 5 Switch at the service provider's Central Office or Regional Switching Center. The CopperComplete DSL architecture features true telephony(TM), seamless integration, flexibility and efficiency, ease of provisioning and management, and 99.999% reliability.

The CopperCom MXR is a customer premise device that combines data and voice traffic onto a DSL line. Easily installed, managed, and provisioned, it is a full DSL data router that also supports from 4 to 16 analog connections from any telephone, fax machine, key system, and PBX.

Designed from the beginning to be NEBs compliant, the CopperCom Gateway is a carrier-class system with protection switching so that calls are never lost. It is a fully redundant, chassis-based system that houses hot-swappable cards for system control, ATM, and T1 connections, as well as a dual packet bus. ...

Alcatel is in all the right places,
Michael
