E*Trade plans to convert some of the 8,500 ATM machines of the closely held Card Capture to financial kiosks, where customers can access their banking and brokerage accounts. E*Trade completed its purchase of online bank Telebank in January.

'This acquisition supports E*Trade's mission of democratizing financial services by giving consumers even more opportunities and choices to benefit from the value and convenience of online banking and investing,' E*Trade's chairman and chief executive Christos M. Cotsakos said in a statement.

E*Trade last month leased 30,000 square feet of street-level space in midtown Manhattan, around the corner from branches for rival brokerages Charles Schwab Corp., Fidelity Investments and TD Waterhouse Group Inc.
