Nortel Slams Lucent's LAN Business Strategy, Reports Sm@RtReseller; Says Internal Memo Implies Lucent Abandoning the Enterprise
GARDEN CITY, N.Y., March 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Lucent Technologies has slammed Nortel Networks' plans to spin off its LAN business, according to an exclusive report to be published in the Mar. 13 issue of Sm@rtReseller. In an internal memorandum, viewed by Joseph C. Panettieri, editor of The Newsweekly for Today's Channel, Nortel questions Lucent's strategy and implies that Lucent is abandoning enterprise customers.
The March 6 memo sent to Nortel channel partners says Lucent's spinout plan is "evidence that the company could not compete against stronger enterprise players." The memo also states that Nortel has "no plans to spin off its own enterprise businesses or abandon any of its enterprise customers."
The memo's strongest statements are attributed to Bill Conner, president of Nortel's enterprise-solutions business. "Lucent clearly was ill-prepared for the demands of this segment," wrote Conner. "(Lucent's plan to back) away from (the) enterprise is in sharp contrast to Nortel Networks, which sees enormous synergies among our technologies and product areas."
Despite Nortel's jabs, a Lucent spokeswoman told Sm@rtReseller that the company is not abandoning its enterprise customers. Instead, she says both Lucent and its as-yet-unnamed spinout will target different sections of the enterprise market.
The complete report, Nortel Slams Lucent's Strategy," is posted to Sm@rtReseller's web site, smartreseller.com, in addition to being published in the Mar. 13 issue.
