Long way to go to catch up to NT at that rate I would say! By the implication for Optics network goes beyond backbone.....edge routers/switches market share will be affected by what happens in the optics arena. CSCO is exposed on both fronts. You better hope the risk is built into their share price.

BRAMPTON, ON, Mar 13, 2000 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Nortel Networks' (NYSE/TSE: NT) market leadership in delivering optical network solutions is confirmed once again by the latest figures released by the Dell'Oro Group, an independent research and consulting firm. Dell'Oro's market data for 1999 for the US$15.3 billion Dense-Wavelength Division Multiplexing (D-WDM) and SONET/SDH Optical Internet solutions market show that Nortel Networks continues to make significant gains in both key segments of the Optical Internet.
For 1999, Nortel Networks took the number one position with a global market share of 30 percent for D-WDM and SONET/SDH Optical Internet solutions. According to Dell'Oro, Nortel Networks captured 33.3 percent of the 1999 US$3.8 billion D-WDM market and demonstrated explosive momentum in the fourth quarter with 39 percent market share.
In the SONET/SDH market, Nortel Networks was again number one with 29 percent of the US$11.5 billion market.
