Boston Globe Article

Nice story highlighting the AMD/Intc battles. Didn't know AMD had made such impressive penetration in the mid/high end.

'It's like a yappy little dog making a run at a pit bull,' said Keith Diefendorff, editor in chief of the Microprocessor Report, an industry newsletter. 'It's amazing that they've even come close and have even beaten Intel. It's quite astonishing, really.'

"AMD began to see its market share creep up, particularly at the high end of the market. In January 1999, Intel commanded 97 percent of the sales in the United States for chips used in personal computers that sold for $1,500 to $2,000, while AMD had 3 percent, according to Stephen Baker, director of hardware analysis at PC Data in Reston, Va. By January 2000, Intel's share was down to 53.5 percent, while AMD claimed 46.5 percent, Baker said."
