Maybe I was tangential, Michael. I wasn't looking at private charity (too big a problem, I agree with Alexa's assessment there) but at the idea that religion or any God-based moral standard be worked into the fine print of out gov't, whether federal or local.
Some charity targets, like the mentally ill, would benefit from a larger charity umbrella, one big enough to tackle the issues that just don't make economical sense to the drug cos. I am unable to think up a working society whose government is disconnected from social policy issues. I haven't thought deeply on the subject, but I am continually amazed at the number of people who are trying to gain the last bit of personal gain. There's gotta be some level of gov't that strikes the "least evil" balance between a society of hyenas and one of ants.
I don't consider myself liberal; libertarian is closer to it for me. At the same time I can't take the ideal of decentralization to its limit w/o running into big trouble.
