Then just what was it that Intel licensed to AMD for MMX?

If memory serves, Intel did not license MMX to AMD. AMD filed a lawsuit against Intel. The result of that lawsuit was that AMD was allowed to use the TERM "mmx", on the theory that the term is merely letters of the alphabet and not protectable.
