Jim, RE: "Maybe I'm way off here but it seems that Microsoft is in the software business and games are software?"

Microsoft is planning to market consumer electronics hardware, a consumer finished product. Sony has spent it's corporate life very successful in this marketplace, they know the channels, they know the consumer, they know how to market/advertise to the segment. Software is a completely different market. How much volume is Microsoft doing with Toys R Us?

Conjecture:

On the other hand, IF Microsoft were to develop a REALLY compelling standard, dependant on MS software and x86 hardware, that might make things interesting. Sony and others might be motivated to adapt the standard to eliminate competition from not only Microsoft but also the current PC manufacturers, and other upstart companies. It would be the classic PC business model.

I really don't think Microsoft wants to get their hands dirty in the messy, low margin business of manufacturing products. If they could establish a standard, I would expect them to exit the hardware end at the earliest opportunity.
