Odd how one hears such a different story from gay men. Is it possible that they know something you don't? You might try dropping into a gay discussion group or two and asking the participants for some stories. Unless, that is, you are afraid of contamination. It would be interesting to hear the opinions of some of the gay people on SI. They are here, of course, but they generally don't announce their presence. The last time I saw a man admit to being gay on SI he was immediately set upon by a pack of Christians, who accused him of being a degenerate pervert, the spawn of Satan, and an agent of the Antichrist. They told him that AIDS was God's punishment to America for tolerating him and those like him (conveniently forgetting that AIDS is every bit as much a problem in societies which do not tolerate homosexuals). At least one expressed the opinion that he should be shot. Gay men on SI tend to keep well under wraps. Gay men in many parts of America do the same, and fear for their physical safety is a real reason why. Check this out: godhatesfags.com and ask yourself if a gay man could feel safe living near the people behind it.
