Re Is this a threat.

No. its complementary. I am working on applications which will have a web,a WAP (what your reference is about) and a voice interface. The trick is to have technology which lets all three interfaces run from a common underlying set of technology and logic, rather than 3 separate applications. With separate applications, if yoyu wnat to make a fundamental change, you have to make it 3 times (at least) and then keep those changes in step as new features or just bug fuxes are released.

With a common set of underlying technology and logic, that means that if you change something fundamental to the application, say adding additional customer information, or a new function, that is available to all interfaces immediately, or with minor changes.

For example, Oracle's WebToGo app will take underlying database info, or HTML, and then produce output to multiple WAP standards, VoXML, and others. You then need technology such as LHSP or Nunance to manage the voice interface via the VoXML.
