Satyam , SingTel in Internet gateway deal
MADRAS, India, March 14 (Reuters) - Indian Internet firm Satyam Infoway Ltd said on Tuesday it is partnering Singapore Telecommunications Ltd (SingTel) to launch its own private Internet gateway.
``The private international gateway will be located at five strategic cities in the country (India) and will make a marked difference to the speed of Internet access,' the firm said in a statement in the southern city of Madras.
Satyam Infoway signed a deal with India's Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in February for setting up the five Internet gateways in the cities of Bombay, Pune, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad and Cochin.
India's state-run Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd enjoyed a monopoly as overseas telecommunications access provider until recently when the Indian government decided to allow private operators to set up their own gateways.
Satyam Infoway, a subsidiary of Indian software services firm Satyam Computer Services Ltd , is the country's largest private Internet provider with 129,000 subscribers spread over 35 cities. It also operates a portal, SatyamOnline.com.
