I'm not sure that "anyone" can measure inflation properly even if they are well intentioned. It's too complex and there are too many subjective ideas about it to begin with.

Considering that tinkering with the numbers is an easy way to raise taxes and cut spending without anyone getting thrown out of office, I'm almost certain that the current set of figures is hopelessly useless anyway.

At this point I am less concerned with that. I'm so cynical that I practically view the government as my adversary. (g)

In my mind the greater issue is whether by manipulating the inflation figures the government can accomplish any more than raising taxes and cutting spending.

Can they permanently influence interest rates across the board?
