BGR,
Here's a few of the things I have a problem with when it comes to the CPI.
If the government mandates that a product meet certain standards, the cost goes up. They then say it is a better product. But in some cases they are mandating things that some of us don't want. That should be reflected somewhere.
I was happy with Windows 3.01, Word and Excel. But I am being forced to pay for stuff I don't need, don't want, and couldn't care less about. They say no inflation because it's better, but I say I am being forced to pay for stuff I don't want. That should be reflected somewhere.
The quality of government services vs. tax increases is not included in the CPI. (roads, bridges, public schools, public safety, public transportation etc..)
They say people substitute chicken for steak. I say some people can no longer afford a steak.
I could go on and on. My point being, that a reasonable case can be many for may sides of the inflation story, but the government dismisses anything that would make the CPI go up and eagerly accepts anything that makes it go down.
