The genomics companies will make money in the end by patenting the specific therapeutic use of gene products (proteins). This will be the BIG revenue money. Selling data to pharmaceutical companies will only provide revenue while the full sequence is not widely available or is in a form that is not very useful.

Companies that provide data mining tools and expertise are going to be needed as are companies that can provide full length cDNA (full length genes ready to use) on demand.

It will take years to work through all the 100,000 + genes in the human genome and decades more to find the function of each protein. Some proteins have been studied for more than a decade already and we still don't know how they function fully (example: p53 tumor suppressor gene which is mutated or deleted in more than 50% of all cancers).

Companies like HGSI have the in house expertise, or have made alliances with companies, to do the data mining, to find the genes and to find out the function of the most interesting ones. By giving these companies huge market caps and paper wealth, investors have provided the means for a wave of consolidation that will make the bank consolidations look like childs play.

Buy and hold a big vertically integrated genomics company like HGSI (which does both drug development and gene hunting) and reap the rewards as that company buys all the other companies to provide real value to match the hugely inflated stock prices.

With more than 50% pull back in these stocks I would be looking to buy on the first up tick! Things are just beginning.

My two cents.

Graham
