I just found out last weekend. We had a board discussion this past weekend that rationalized why CMGI would not want to tip its hand in advance of the date because this would increase volatility. Short term traders would buy in shortly before and consider dumping shortly after the date. The PALM 3COM example was sighted as a perfect example of why we wouldn't want to do this. Also, DW seems to want to reward the loyal long shareholders and this is certainly one smart way to do it. It increases the likelyhood that the longs will get the DSP shares and they won't have to share as many with the traders.

In short, I believe we were all taken by surprise. But as a long term investor in CMGI, I am more likely to win with this policy of not announcing until afterwards.
