Well, the exit polls say that McCain is not well-regarded by people and that he should apologize if he wants to gain some measure of respect after his disreputable campaign. He stood to be crushed even if he hadn't left the country.

btw, the Washington Post detailed how NBC's Tim Russert worked with the McCain campaign, phoning a key strategist with early exit poll results.
