TollBridge Technologies and Broadcom Team to Deliver Carrier Class Voice over Cable
Business Wire - March 14, 2000 10:06
SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 14, 2000--

Pioneering Partnership Enables Cable Operators to Deploy Standards-based Broadband Voice Services with the Same Features and

Scalability As Circuit Switched Telephony Networks

TollBridge Technologies, Inc., a leading developer of IP-based voice-over-broadband solutions for next-generation carriers, today announced a multilevel partnership with Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ:BRCM), a leading provider of integrated circuits and Voice-over-IP (VoIP) solutions enabling broadband communications to and throughout the home and business. The partnership involves co-development, co-marketing, and standards promotion designed to accelerate the large-scale deployment of voice-over-cable services. The voice services will be delivered using standard Data-over-Cable Service Interface specification (DOCSIS) 1.1-compliant cable equipment.

"Our partnership with TollBridge will enable us to stimulate demand for commercially deployable telephony-over-cable solutions." said Ross Mitchell, vice president of packet telephony for Broadcom. "This will give our systems partners and their cable operator customers greater flexibility in delivering broadband telephony with improved time to market. In particular, voice service can be delivered either from a Class 5 switch via GR-303 or from an NCS/MGCP call agent, depending on the needs of the subscribers in a particular geographical region."

"TollBridge's alliance with Broadcom is gratifying, given their pivotal position of delivering core silicon and VoIP technology to most of the DOCSIS-compliant cable equipment vendors," said Agnes Imregh, vice president of marketing at TollBridge Technologies. "The two companies will jointly promote the technology with our service provider customers, telecom equipment partners, and standards organizations. Additionally, the two companies will extend their cooperation into Broadcom's DSL products and initiatives."

"The TollBridge/Broadcom alliance sends the right message to carriers such as Black Hills FiberCom that want to use the same equipment and protocols to deliver voice over any broadband," said Mike Timmer, director of operations at Black Hills FiberCom, a Midwestern total communications provider delivering voice, video, and high speed data services. "The extension of the TollBridge platform to DOCSIS-compliant cable systems is absolutely the right step."

(Editor's note: TollBridge will demonstrate toll-quality voice over cable using Broadcom's 4-Channel BCM93310V DOCSIS 1.1 VoIP Cable Telephony Reference Platform communicating with a TollBridge TB200 gateway. Call control will come via the GR-303 protocols from a Class 5 switch emulator. Calls will also be made over DSL access media using a TollBridge TB50 Integrated Access Device and the same TB200.)

About Voice of Broadband Alliance

TollBridge has spearheaded the alliance program to accelerate large-scale deployments by next-generation carriers, including Competitive Local Exchange Carriers (CLEC's), Inter Exchange Carriers (IXC's), Internet Service Providers (ISPs), Multi Service Operators (MSOs), and cable operators. Alliance partners include the leading providers of DSL, cable and wireless access equipment, Integrated Access Devices (IADs), Integrated Communications Platforms (ICPs), semiconductor solutions, and next-generation switching and services software platforms. To encourage this interoperability effort, TollBridge has launched three groundbreaking initiatives:

- Open Source Code Licensing for IAD Design

TollBridge is making available a GNU GPL (General Public License) version of IAD protocol. The code will be available from the TollBridge Website to facilitate rapid partner development and break down barriers to interoperability.

- Interoperability Lab

At its headquarters in Santa Clara, TollBridge is hosting an interoperability lab specifically for Voice of Broadband Alliance partners to ensure product interoperability. Products passing all tests receive Powered by TollBridge certification and associated logo for display in marketing materials.

- Joint Standards Promotion

TollBridge is committed to an open standards environment for voice-over-broadband equipment providers. TollBridge is investing resources to jointly fund standards promotion and interoperability activities as well as providing partners with promotional space and equipment at industry events.
