Yew tape can be digital and all back-up tape is digital. VCR is quasi analog, actually FM encoded. This is very good for its purpose and analog has infinite bandwidth. However the new HDTV ready VCR is the DVC or digital video cassette. It will record digitally. Now when do yo suppose some disk is gonna be used in a camera? Why are the Japanese, the kings of optical and MO disks, going ot tape for the camera? Sounds like we have a capacity problem here. We are in a new game and new tape systems will be very dramatic in their performance. All the various media will do well, including tape. The combination of multi-channel MR heads and higher performance tape will ensure some grreat new products and may spell the end of helical scans over the long haul. The larger the other media get in stiorgae capacity, the more we'll need tape.
