"Customers deposit money onto a smart card at an authorized teller machine and then place the card into their in-home display unit. The money is then electronically transferred from the card to the smart meter over the power mains. "

Let's think about this for a minute. I can see some advantages for the power company getting pre-paid, but I fail to see the consumer benefits. You come home from a weekend trip to find a huge mess in your refrigerator and wife says "Ooops, I forgot to feed the electric meter!".

Maybe you can pre-buy cheap power, but fall back to a higher cost (but reliable) power if you fail to buy ahead. Does anyone have a clue as to how this is supposed to work? Sounds like neat technology, but what will drive consumers to buy it?
