Actually, Brian, if you watched Nightline last night, the point was made repeatedly that "Clinton fatigue" and dislike of Gore were big factors in Bush's high poll numbers. Although ABC had them running neck and neck, Gallup has Dubya with a serious lead, as do some other polls. I gave mild suppport to Dubya for distancing himself from the NRA. I nevertheless understand the feeling of some of my friends that the focus should be elsewhere. On McCain, well, you are mistaken if you think that Dubya needs him much. Nevertheless, he could be helpful, and something conciliatory is desirable. On the other hand, Dubya is not going to undermine his own campaign by accepting the McCain version of events, so yes, McCain needs to make more of an effort towards reconciliation. On delusions, well, I have been telling Democrats for over a year that there would be "Clinton fatigue", that Bush would likely get the nomination and had a good shot at winning, and that the poll numbers for House Republicans would rebound, all of which has transpired. Permit me to doubt that I am out of touch with reality. The rest is impertinent, so I will leave it there....... |
