Cellphone Antenna Fears Spark Unrest

Updated 8:56 AM ET March 15, 2000

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli police clashed with rioters in a Druze Arab village Tuesday and several people were hurt during protests against the installation of antennas for cellular telephones, a member of parliament said.
Ahmed Tibi, an Arab member of the Knesset, said villagers set fire to a cellular phone store in the northern Israeli town of Essefiah during disturbances sparked by fears that the antennas could cause cancer.

He said seven police officers were hurt in the unrest. Israel Radio said 10 people were injured, five of them police.

"Since there were many cancer cases among the residents, they demanded that these antennas be removed. The people were worried, although there is no scientific proof that this is linked to the cancer cases," Tibi told Reuters.

Police were not immediately available for comment.

The Druze are a secretive Islamic sect with members in Israel, Syria and Lebanon.
