IBM on Tuesday rolled out a pair of four-way symmetric multiprocessing Netfinity servers designed for Windows 2000. The Netfinity 7600 and Netfinity 7100 servers are the first to fully incorporate IBM's X-architecture. Officials say the servers will have performance capabilities typically found on mainframe and mid-range systems.

"X-architecture is the umbrella for this whole set of advanced technologies that are trickling down," said Jim Garden, an analyst at Technology Business Research.

The two systems add cableless connections and a design that lets administrators remove the entire processor I/O complex quickly without using tools. The X-architecture features include an advanced systems management processor, which is a dedicated processor that monitors and manages the health of the system, and a power fuel gauge to indicate how much redundant power is used in the system.

The systems are based on Intel 550-MHz Pentium III Xeon processors, with 16 Gbytes of memory maximum capacity for internal expansion. The 7600 ships with Active PCI and with IBM's Chipkill, a technology that lets systems recover from complete memory-chip failure.

Active PCI lets customers add and swap storage and network capability. Chipkill helps prevent memory failure for enterprise resource planning, customer relationship management, and other applications that require high availability.

Pricing starts at $9,943 for the Netfinity 7600 and at $6,993 for the Netfinity 7100.
