While MSNBC is a joint venture with MSFT and NBC, remember that it is also a news agency. People in that industry hate being beholden and good people rarely stay on after they are forced to bend the truth to meet the corporate parents needs. Also, CNBC and MSNBC are distinct organizations with separate management. With how fast everything happens today, it is not possible for MSFT to influence the sister of a partially-owned subsidary--at least not that fast and without there being major consequences (lots of journalists jumping ship).
