PocketTV Brings Video To Palm-size PC

Updated 2:28 PM ET March 9, 2000
SAN FRANCISCO (BUSINESS WIRE) - MpegTV announces PocketTV, the first MPEG movie viewer for Windows-CE Palm-size and Handheld PCs. PocketTV is capable of playing movie files encoded in the standard MPEG-1 format (extension .mpg).
"With PocketTV, your Handheld or Palm-size PC becomes a miniature VCR. You can put an entire movie in your pocket. Basically MPEG is to video what MP3 is to music. It is an open, non-proprietary, non-encrypted format. Like MP3, MPEG files are highly compressed: A 64 MB CompactFlash card can store more than one hour of video (with audio)!" said Tristan Savatier, President of MpegTV. A few MPEG clips on the PocketTV website demonstrate the amazing capabilities of PocketTV on devices such as the Casio Cassiopeia E-105 or the HP Jornada 430se.

MpegTV does not yet provide the tools for making your own MPEG files for PocketTV, but several companies (Ligos, Heuris, Medio Systems, etc) license commercial software MPEG encoders capable of producing MPEG-1 files from various video sources. Low-cost hardware MPEG encoders for PC are also available.

"As soon as wireless streaming reaches 100 Mbit/sec or higher bitrate for Palm-size devices, PocketTV will bring streaming video directly to your Pocket", added Tristan.

PocketTV is available for MIPS, SH3, SH4 and ARM Palm-size and Handheld PCs running WinCE version 2.0, 2.01 and 2.11, and upcoming WinCE 3.0 Windows-Powered Pocket PC, code name "Rapier".

PocketTV is FREE but redistribution is not permitted.
