WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. wholesale prices, boosted by costlier fuel and tobacco, spiked 1.0 percent in February in the biggest jump in 9-1/2 years, the government said on Thursday.

The Labor Department's Producer Price Index (PPI) was sure to stoke inflation jitters in the financial world. The core PPI rate, which factors out volatile food and energy prices, rose 0.3 percent.
