3Com Chief Exec Says Networking Industry Growth Strong

Dow Jones News Services

SAN FRANCISCO -- 3Com Corp. (COMS) Chief Executive Eric Benhamou said
the networking industry continues to grow ''very strongly'' around the world.

Computing has become ''network intensive'' and this trend is unlikely to stop anytime
soon, Benhamou said at the Hambrecht & Quist technology conference.

Spending a substantial portion of his address on his proposed merger with U.S.
Robotics Corp. (USRX), Benhamou said customers have positive expectations for the
combination.

He was optimistic as well about its affect on the two companies's performance.
Together U.S. Robotics and 3Com will have a 44% share of the fast-growing market
for remote access devices. The combined company intends to gain share by promoting
U.S. Robotics' next-generation, high-density product, he said.

Remote access devices enable off-site computer users to dial into or otherwise connect
to corporate networks. High-density products concentrate more connections, often
modems, in a single device.
Benhamou went on to say an immediate benefit of the merger would be the mutual use
of each company's distribution channels to sell the other company's products.

He also said 3Com continued to gain share in the market for 10/100 network access
cards during the first three months of the year despite a March price cut by competitor
Intel Corp. (INTC).
