The heart of the matter is the dealer's invoice. Most car shoppers believe it tells how much the dealer paid for a new vehicle. But it's an inflated figure.

The invoice prices include the holdback, an amount that varies from brand to brand, and can be as much as 3% of the full sticker price - $750 on a $25,000 car. The dealer pays the manufacturer the holdback, but the manufacturer refunds it to the dealer every quarter or so.
