There's a variety of research indicating that vision may be preserved by:

1. Avoiding any UV light sources.
2. Eating red grapes or drinking red wine
3. Taking Vitamin E(natural source only).

By the "brutal method" being used presently reference, I trust that you're referring to the practice by some Canadian doctors of burning a hole through the macula to get at the abnormal blood vessels. This theory has never saved a single person's vision; causes an immediate, irreversible loss of vision due to the hole burnt through the macula; isn't done in the states, nor by less barbaric doctors in Canada.

Given the availability of Visudyne at 200 treatment sites growing to 400, I think it's almost criminal for doctors to blind their patients with a treatment that the stats prove is counterproductive. There now is an effective alternative.
