I agree with you about the usual clich‚s pertaining to the Latin/Mediterranean culture --bon vivant, farniente, dolce vita, and so on....

Yet, beware of the language divide. I live in a country --Belgium-- where both Germanic and Latin cultures coexist... err...I should say collide.... Do you think that here the Flemings praise the so-called "joie de vivre" of their fellow Walloons?? Hey, they'd rather think of Latins as a bunch of freeloading bums!

Another point is that you're likely not competing with Hispanics when it comes to slicing your share of the "American pie".... I mean, it's always easy for upper-class folks to despise the rednecks' narrow-minded racism or the scholars' worries as irrelevant fantasies so long as you don't have to scramble for the same pizza-delivery job.

Visiting San Antonio as an anthropologist can be a mesmerizing experience indeed, whereas belonging to the city as a displaced Cracker must be kind of a much less glamorous experience....
