I have a question about Island's short indications.

The Island book viewer shows an 'S' after the size when a stock is involved in a short transaction.

I'm a bit confused, though, because this can appear on both sides of the display.

If an 'S' entry shows up on the bid side, just what does this mean? Is it somebody covering a short?

Since ISLD is not a market-maker, entries on the bid side HAVE to be buys and entries on the offer side HAVE to be sells. Right? Or am I missing something?

BTW, I think that this can be a very useful indication. If you'd have looked at the Island book on COMS on the morning of the PALM IPO, it was almost all 'S's. What a prophetic indicator!
