You know, I've heard talk about how great NT is at keeping their top talent, but I was talking to a friend of mine at Nortel the other day, when he said something shocking: "I have no stock options!"

That floored me. Here this guy is in a project management position in IT and he has no options. Granted that the product engineers are the high dollar folks like Telecomguy pointed out, but what about the rest of the rank and file within Nortel. The way to build a great team is to give everyone a stake in the team, as Cisco has done.

It shocked me that Nortel is so behind the times as to not give at least their project managers and up stock options. This particular guy didn't seem pretty bitter about it, but I sure as hell would be considering the tremendous runup Nortel has had in the last year.

Ahh well, not every company gets it. Those that do will be the long term winners. Afterall, Roth is the leader, but it takes a team to succeed.
