GIGA has been a competitor of PMCS.< fwiw, last time i peeked, Giga had whopping sales of $19 and $25M in '98 and '99, respectively. on the other hand, Intel's veep of the Network Comm Group (Christensen), says they've now got 25 contracts with networkers. not exactly significant. also, it appears Giga targets predominately the high-end: OC-48 to -192. although we're moving here, this area is currently more the realm of AMCC and VTSS. in my insignificant opinion, we're simply in the midst of a (overdue) tech wreck. but nothing the mo-morons won't solve mo-mo'tarily.
