Dan <Microsoft benefits from cheap PCs, and Intel doesn't. To a first order approximation, the cheaper PCs are, the more money Microsoft makes. It's to Microsoft's advantage to have AMD keeping the heat on Intel, and I don't see where Intel really has anything to offer Microsoft that could compare to what Microsoft gains from having real competition in the x86 cpu market.>

And the corresponding position of the box-makers is to want competition in the OS & basic software (office suites) so they can sell more boxes and/or negotiate for higher margins. Competition is good.

<Most interesting to me, as the register piece implies, X-box is a real threat to PC OEMs, and Microsoft has an interesting dance to do there.>

This has been something I have thought a lot about since x-box became a big event. I don't think the OEMs will like MS getting into the box market any more than they would like Intel. I don't see how the box makers can really "compete" with MS at this point -- they couldn't offer an x-box clone since they will not be able to subsidize low (or negative) hardware margins from game licensing. The best option for OEMs would be if (and this is a big if) there was an alternative OS/office suite package.

If the optimizations in the x-box include components that are specific to Nvidia then the other graphics chip/board makers wouldn't be too happy about this either.

The x-box reminds me of Apple -- which controls both the HW and the OS so they can control the entire environment and can attempt to optimize the components.
