BEIJING (March 13) XINHUA - China's demand for major household appliances this year will continue to grow, according to the State Administration of Internal Trade (SAIT).
The demand will maintain the annual growth rate of more than ten percent since 1996, Monday's China Daily quoted an estimate by the All-China Commercial Information Center of the SAIT.
The sales volume of household appliances in China will get close to 140 billion yuan (16.9 billion U.S. dollars) by the end of 2000.
Performance of color TV sets and air conditioners will stand out among all household appliances with a rapid increase in sales, said Liu Xiumin, a director with the center.
The market potential for air conditioners is great, for few Chinese urbanites have air conditioners, compared to washing machines and color TV sets, she explained.
The demand for air conditioners will reach eight million this year, the estimate showed.
At the same time, the country's demand for color TV sets is expected to climb to 30 million, and new styles such as liquid crystal display TV and digital TV will gradually become popular.
The center also estimated China's demand for video compact disk (VCD) players at four million this year and that for super VCD players at six million.
