7) The thread still thinks that JDSU is a king even though the author of the manual has crowned the company a gorilla.

The book's author has never really justified his one sentence claim. I can't recall the exact words used, but they were obtuse and the author's motives were somewhat conflicted. I would love to be proven wrong on this, but I will need to see the author's logic, not just his conclusions.

8) I know FM was late with crowning QCOM a gorilla but do you all really think that he is wrong again by calling JDSU a gorilla.

Yes.

9) Are we looking at this company closer than we should?
We will continue to look at this company very closely, looking for signs of gorilla-dom (we may be wrong) and for signs that the King's throne is being threatened. In fact, because it is a King, keeping watch on JDSU is very important because we must be among the first to recognize that a competitor or the marketplace are taking growth, revenue, and margin away, for it will happen very quickly if it happens and the stock price will fall even faster.

10) For us all non-tech people in this thread, can someone in one sentence tell us why this company is not a gorilla.

JDSU has no patents on the underlying technologies that its products are based on. They have an "open non-proprietary architecture". Their Kingly privilege is based on manufacturing capacity, manufacturing techniques, and the ability to produce both passive and active optical components.

JDSU's value chains are weak. It is NOT in their value chain partner's interests to protect JDSU's throne. Another manufacturer could produce the components that LU and NT require with no harm to LU and NT.

11) Shouldn't we all take more risk with this company?

JDSU is my #2 holding at 20%.

12) If this company has been crowned a king (gorilla?) than why are the founding fathers of this thread paying more attention and investing in smaller potential gorillas of tomorrow like CREE, ELON, GMST, SEBL, and CITX.

JDSU is a no-brainer. A good investment in a spectacular market. Investments have been made. Time to talk about new tornadoes. We just keep an eye on JDSU. (Hold Kings lightly.)
