The Financial Post reports in its Thursday edition that Pinetree Capital is a top stock pick of Francis Roche, president of Edmonton-based Roche Securities. Buy & Sell columnist Sonita Horvitch notes the stock, currently $13.50, has a 52-week range of $24.50 to $2.80. Mr. Roche says this Toronto-based firm provides financing for emerging growth companies with "breakthrough proprietary products." Pinetree also provides management expertise to the companies it finances. Its strategic investments include Enghouse Systems, a software developer, and Visible Genetics, which makes and markets automated DNA sequencing systems. Overall, Mr. Roche says the clear winner in Canada for more aggressive equity investors is the new Canadian Venture Exchange index and this should continue. He says, however, that investors should be highly selective in their technology stocks in the junior market as some of these companies are very early stage.
