Jack, (or Ray, since you seem to understand what Jack is referring to), please define what you mean by "optical transceivers" for their (CSCO's) routers.

It would seem unlikely to me, at least, that they would fab their own optical components and modules which make up optical transmitters and receivers, or any other components used in their card and port level hardware, for that matter. Isn't CSCO known for sourcing out most board level hardware, including optical wares (which are highly specialized) to third parties? I would assume that not even the startups who you mentioned (Cerent and Monterey) make/made their own optical components.

Let's hear from Curtis B., or John C. or one of the other in-the-know folks concerning CSCO's manufacturing practices in this context. Certainly, I could be wrong, so please forgive me if I'm missing your point, or something that should be obvious to me here. Maybe I've been away from the factory for far too long... FAC
